Types of Construction Membranes

Waterproofing Membranes

Waterproofing membranes are essential for protecting structures from water ingress, which can cause significant damage over time. These membranes are used in various parts of a building, including foundations, roofs, and walls.

  • Sheet Membranes: These are pre-formed sheets that are applied to surfaces to create a waterproof barrier. Products like SikaProof® A+12 are installed in the formwork before concrete is poured, ensuring a seamless and durable waterproof layer.
  • Liquid Applied Membranes: These are applied as a liquid and then cure to form a solid, seamless membrane. They are particularly useful for complex shapes and details where sheet membranes might not conform easily.

Roofing Membranes

Roofing membranes provide a critical layer of protection against the elements, ensuring that buildings remain watertight and energy-efficient.

  • Vapour Permeable Membranes: These membranes allow moisture to escape from the building while preventing water ingress. Products like Permavent Apex and Permavent Red are known for their high performance and durability, making them ideal for Irish weather conditions.
  • EPDM Rubber Roof Membranes: These are highly durable and flexible, suitable for flat roofs and areas requiring long-lasting waterproofing solutions.

Vapour Control Membranes

These membranes are used to control the passage of vapour through building components, preventing condensation and associated issues like mold growth and structural damage.

  • Airtightness Membranes: These are designed to create a tight seal, preventing air leakage and improving the building’s energy efficiency. They are crucial for meeting passive house standards and other energy efficiency requirements.

Timber Frame Membranes

Timber frame membranes are used in timber construction to provide moisture control and enhance the thermal performance of walls.

  • Breather Membranes: Positioned on the cold side of the insulation, these membranes allow water vapour to escape while preventing water ingress. They help maintain a healthy building environment by reducing the risk of condensation within the wall structure.

Applications in Construction

Residential Buildings

In residential construction, membranes are used extensively to ensure homes are energy-efficient, moisture-resistant, and durable. Waterproofing membranes protect basements and foundations, while vapour control layers and airtightness membranes enhance thermal performance and comfort.

Commercial Buildings

Commercial buildings benefit from robust membrane solutions to protect large-scale structures from water damage and improve energy efficiency. Roofing membranes, such as those offered by Permavent, provide essential protection for commercial roofing projects, ensuring longevity and reliability.

Industrial and Specialized Structures

Industrial buildings, including factories and warehouses, often require heavy-duty waterproofing and vapour control solutions. Membranes used in these applications need to withstand harsh conditions and provide long-term protection.

Benefits of Using Construction Membranes

  1. Enhanced Durability: Membranes provide a durable barrier against water ingress and environmental damage, extending the lifespan of building components.
  2. Energy Efficiency: By preventing air leakage and controlling moisture, membranes help maintain consistent indoor temperatures and reduce energy consumption.
  3. Improved Indoor Air Quality: Vapour control membranes reduce the risk of mold growth and other moisture-related issues, contributing to healthier indoor environments.
  4. Regulatory Compliance: Many membrane products are designed to meet stringent building codes and standards, ensuring compliance with local regulations.
